Welcome to Casa Cava

    Ascolta l’audio descrizione

The Casa Cava di Matera is a unique theater of its kind, entirely excavated in the limestone rock of the Sassi of Matera.

Located in the heart of Sasso Barisano, this theater was discovered in the 90s by Enzo Viti, a well-known scholar and enthusiast of the city’s history.

Originally, it was an ancient tuff pit quarry, used to extract tuff, a sedimentary rock common in the region.

The Casa Cava is a unique example of a well of this size dug completely by hand.

After being used as a landfill for many years, it was recovered in 2011 and, following a long debate about its future use, it was transformed into a theater and congress centre.

The unique acoustic and phonic characteristics of the Casa Cava make it perfect for hosting theater performances and concerts.

Its location within the Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes it an even more special and fascinating place for spectators.

The Casa Cava represents an important example of the reuse of historic sites and offers an extraordinary opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and culture of this unique city.
