The Crypt of the Original Sin is a rock church of great historical-artistic importance, located in Matera, in Basilicata.
It is also known as the "Crypt of the Hundred Saints" or the "Church of the Flower Painter", due to the numerous frescoes that decorate its walls and the drawings of red flowers present at their feet. The church was discovered by chance by some shepherds and is believed to have been part of a Benedictine rock monastery from the Lombard period.
It is famous for the pictorial cycle on the walls, which represents evil in the form of a fig, and for being one of the five oldest churches in Italy in which this theme is present.
Today, together with the Musma and the Casa di Ortega, the church is managed by the Synchronos Cooperative.
