The Church of St. Augustine is located in such a way as to appreciate both sides of the Murgia Materana and the Sasso Barisano.
It was founded in 1592 by the monks of the order of the Eremitani, who also annexed the church dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Here you can admire examples of late Baroque architecture with an interior in the shape of a Latin cross.
Inside there is a gilded and painted pipe organ dating back to 1770, the work of the Liguori brothers from Montemurro.
On the counter-façade, there is the emblem of the Augustinians with the heart of Jesus pierced by an arrow, a book, and a belt.
The Church of St. Augustine replaced the Rock Church of Barisano and is one of the many churches of the Piano.
Visiting it allows you to discover even more one of the oldest stable human settlements in the world, with a history that dates back over 9,000 years.
