The Church of Santa Chiara is a historic landmark, dating back to the late 17th century.
Its Baroque style is more sober than other nearby churches and its exterior is unique thanks to the corrosion of the Matera rock which adds to its charm.
Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful wooden pulpit and a painting of Mary in the Temple.
Adjacent buildings were later built, first as a hospital and then as a convent for the nuns of La Maddalena and Santa Chiara, before finally being converted into the Domenico Ridola National Museum in the 20th century.
The Church of Santa Chiara remains one of Matera's most significant landmarks.
