The Tramontano Castle takes its name from the count to which it belonged, who had received the fiefdom of Matera from the King of Naples Ferdinand II in exchange for credits.
However, this decision was not well received by the population of Matera, who had already paid a ransom to remain a free city and the king had promised never to give the fiefdom to anyone else.
Tired of the taxes that had to be paid for the construction of the castle, a group of men ambushed the count, who was killed on 29 December 1515 on his return from the cathedral after a brief escape.
The place of the events was later called Via del Riscatto.
Due to the count’s murder, the Tramontano Castle remained unfinished.
Today the Tramontano Castle is undergoing restoration, with the recovery of the moat and walls financed with funds from the lottery game.
Tramontano Castle is not open to the public, but it is possible to visit it during FAI days.
